Shining a Light on Invisible Flat Time to Illuminate Offshore Cost Savings

June 25, 2021

Offshore operations spend more time waiting and much less time drilling than a land-based rig.  In fact, a typical offshore well consists of 70-80% flat, or non-drilling time.  Safety on the high seas and capital expenditures outlay as much as 20x that of most onshore drilling operations. This underscores the critical need to get every operation right every time with clockwork precision, even if that means limiting drilling speed, by design.  As a result, offshore drilling optimization is largely a matter of fine-tuning time spent on these flat time operations, and focusing on minimizing NPT.

Offshore drillers need analytics to match their extensive-time analysis challenge.  Corva has listened and delivered two powerful new capabilities that enhance flat time analysis and help operators continuously improve.

Corva Time Analysis

When you’re not drilling or tripping, Corva isn’t capturing rig data.  Because offshore operations spend so much time on activities in between trips, this means that there are large windows of flat time with limited insights in the Corva platform (Invisible flat time).  Yet time allocated to these activities warrants as much fine-tuning as tripping speeds and connection times, including frequent blowout preventer testing, formation tests, and BHA changes (which can have multiple logging tools compared to just a few MWD tools for unconventional reservoirs).  Offshore operations can generate dozens of NPT codes as well as myriad problem time codes, like “waiting on weather.”

You can’t manage what you can’t measure and analyze, which is why we built the Time Analysis app.

Time Analysis provides real-time visualization of drilling and workover time events.  It completes the 24-hour picture of offshore operations by bringing live drilling KPIs together with invisible flat-time events.  Now, Corva users can benchmark rig performance while they are not drilling or tripping and identify areas to improve, including rig repairs, cementing BOP testing, and much more.

Automatically Sync WellView Time Codes

Time logs maintained by rig crews make their way to the Corva Cloud in a number of ways.  Users can always manually key time codes in through the platform or import data from WellView, OpenWells, and more to visualize trends in the Time Analysis app.  Time logs can also be sent to Corva’s 24/7 client success team who will happily handle it.

WellView users now have an exciting new option to populate Corva with their on-premise well database.  Corva’s bi-directional WellView integration enables the automatic import of time codes with just a click, accelerating flat time analysis.
